Celebrating our 13th Season
Formerly Doctors Orchestra of Houston
Established in November 2000, Texas Medical Center Orchestra of Houston is one of very few community orchestras in the United States and the world with its origin in the health professions. It includes physicians, dentists, nurses, medical students, biomedical scientists, social workers and other allied health professionals who have a dedication to music that goes beyond their daily occupations.
Dynamic, energetic, charismatic and inspiring, Russian-born conductor Libi Lebel has a strong and growing reputation in the music world for her ability to communicate through orchestras of all shapes and levels. A talented and dedicated orchestra builder, the founder and music director of Texas Medical Center Orchestra is credited with its remarkable growth. The recipient of the 2003 Houston YWCA Outstanding Woman of the Arts award, Ms. Lebel has just been listed as one of the 50 most influential women in Houston.
The mission of the orchestra is to provide a fellowship in both music and medicine for its members, to provide excellent music in public performances that are accessible to the diverse Houston community and to support educational and medically-related charities by calling attention to their work and including them in concerts and other musical programs.
In an effort to develop an appreciation for classical music in young audiences, Texas Medical Center Orchestra has developed an increasingly close relationship with the charter school, KIPP SHARP. During the past two seasons, and again this year, by working closely with KIPP SHARP teachers and administrators, TMCO has integrated its musical programming into the school's art and history curriculum, invited the students to display essays and artwork related to the music in the Wortham lobby at TMCO concerts, encouraged attendance by KIPP students and families at concerts, and perhaps most importantly, has actually brought KIPP choirs and orchestras to the stage for performances.
In 2011, TMCO also began to work with the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Lone Star Chapter in an annual co-sponsorship of a bicycle race that precedes the MS150 and benefits both organizations. This collaborative program has greatly benefited both charities.
To hear the Texas Medical Center Orchestra of Houston is to know that this group of health professionals is playing for the love of the music. The orchestra plays with passion and reveals the strong link between careers in the medical professions and musical talent. TMCO gives consistently outstanding and fresh interpretation to the most beautiful symphonic music in the world.
